All of these are many variations that Google has used on their website in their early days. Google would use these various logos not only for fun, or to celebrate something, but to show how the logo (and in turn Google itself) could be ever changing and will stay with the times and continue to be interesting and give you new information. To this day the logo still follows the mindset of staying up to date and not only celebrate the future, but also celebrate the now and the past. The font is based upon Catull, an old Serif face. They chose this to show that they're educated on the past. They used the colors to create a simple design that showed all the primary colors. They then made the L green to say that Google doesn't always follow the rules all the time and is a unique company.
